Android phones are infinitely customizable. Many android phone users "root" their devices which means they unlock the root directories to allow installation of developer firmwares. Just bear in mind that doing so can be risky as this will devoid the warranty of your device. So even without rooting your phone, you can do a lot of mods to enable your android customization a success. For Mods that can be access without rooting, you can do the following steps:
Step 1: Go to Android market and install a different launcher.
Step 2: Tap the launcher of your choice.
Step 3: From the App drawer try to experiment with different icons by clicking and dragging it to the home screen.
Step 4: Download " Desktop Visualizer" from the android market to create new icons coming from the available photos in your SD.
